Culturally Sensitive Dementia Support Campaign

Hi ,  We need your help to raise funds for The Pearl Dementia Support Network who are trying to address the needs of the lack of culturally sensitive support for people of African and Caribbean decent in the UK who have been affected or are living with Dementia.

The Pearl Dementia Support Network has set up a crowd funding page that we hope you will consider supporting so we as a community can help those affected by Dementia to have a quality of life, live better, longer and with dignity.

Please find more information on this below.

If you would like to support this much needed support service please visit the crowd funding page which can be found here -------> click here

The Pearl Support Network is a not for profit organisation ran by my brother Karl, Dawn and myself. We are trying to raise funds and generate support to address the needs of members of the BME community who are living with dementia and are not able to find culturally relevant services through existing organisations.

The aim is to launch Culturally Sensitive Memory Cafés across the UK on a large scale to provide specially developed, supportive materials and activities in care homes, community centres and appropriate venues for BME people living with or affected by Dementia and their carers.

Why do we need to do this ?

Our mother Pearl, who was of African and Caribbean decent lived with Dementia for over ten years and died as a result of Alzheimer's on the 28th of June 2016 at the age of 75, both myself and my brother tried to care for her during this period but found it very difficult. We had to do our best with what was available by way of support from mainstream, non culturally focused organisations.

The problem we found was that these organisations did not have anything in place by way of activities of culturally sensitive support to cater for the BME community, this included the Chinese culture, people of a South Asian background and even those from the Travellers community. As result, we decided to try and develop products, services, activities and other types of events that were culturally sensitive to help people live better with Dementia based on their cultural background.
