I believe that we as black women, are in a unique position to embrace, as well as inspire and empowering, each other to feel confident with our natural hair. Too long we have applied chemicals to our scalp and hair in order to ‘fit’ in. We are unique that our hair grows up and out. However in a society where hair is only beautiful if it is long and straight we have let various media outlets guide us down the path where we were ashamed of our natural hair. The hair industry, the weaving, the extensions, the chemical treatments is only important due to the fact that the black women’s pound is so powerfulfor those businesses . If we went natural they would undoubtly suffer economically. So what’s more important keeping them on business or keeping our hair natural? Let us begin to instil in our self and the generations that follow that natural is beautiful regardless of the length, texture, curliness or straightness . It is wonderful to see models of colour embracing the natural hair. It has, I admit taken me a long time to let go of the misconception that my hair isn’t good enough. I am now embracing the natural look and sometimes, yes I admit I do feel self conscious without my ’ additional hair’, but this hot weather has boosted my resolve to continue with my natural-ness.
