Black Poppies – An illustrated talk by local historian Stephen Bourne
Stephen Bourne presents an illustrated talk about his acclaimed book Black Poppies, published by The History Press to coincide with the centenary of the First World War. Entertaining and informative, Black Poppies explores the military and civilian wartime experiences of black Britons, from the trenches to the music halls. For Black Poppies Stephen received the Southwark Arts Forum Award for Literature. The talk will be followed by a Q&A.
This event also celebrates Black History Month.
The Friends of Burgess Park project Zeppelin 1917 uncovers the stories of local heroes and the dramatic raid right over what is now Burgess Park. Talks, walks, drama, family events and an exhibition 7-28 October will explore what WWI meant for local people’s lives and how the Great War shapes our current world.
More details about the project and other events. The exhibition is free and is open every Saturday from 7 October. The exhibition will be open to ticket holders from 1pm.
Venue details:
Stepped access – The Old Library has 12 steps to the entrance.
Toilets – Are available but are located lower ground access via steps.
Light refreshments will be available at the Old Library.
Travel:
Buses 343 and 136 stop the closest to the Old Library, the bus stop is on Wells Way (coming from the south the bus stop is immediately opposite and coming from the north a short walk). The 42 bus stops close by on Albany Road.
Refunds:
The ticket is £5.00 refundable upon attendance or make a donation to FOBP. The Eventbrite booking fee .90p is not refundable.
