Hey music people it’s that time of the year when COMMUNITY MCR host our annual celebration of Africa’s legendary musican Fela Kuti and you all know it’s called FELABRATION. Taking place at the intimate new Northern Quarter venue The Peer Hat, next to Aatma ( Kraak Gallery ) on SAT OCT 14TH.
When Afrobeat collector and DJ Irfan started his own tribute event way back in the late 90s, in Mcr, he called it REMMEBA FELA and since then it has become a global celebration as Felabration, also taking place at the home of Fela, at The Shrine in Lagos, so we now call it Felabration Manchester.
Joining Irfan on the decks are two local music collectors and Djs, Posh aka Isa Cole and Will Townson. African brother Posh hailing from Preston has been around for over two decades and his known for this super ecletic selections all of styles and tempos. He has been performing at various gigs all the over the North-West for a long long time, recently with Mcr’s Better Days and has supported the Manchester Black Music scene since being a teenager.
Will Townson is another music collector whose tastes are hugely varied too. He’s been around the scene for a decade plus and has just started his new tropical music themed party Discolypso at Band on the Wall where heavy vintage afrobeat can be heard. Next party Sat 21st Oct, go check it.
Host and veteran Mancunian DJ Irfan has opened up the live show for Femi Kuti, hosted the band, remixed and released the music of former band arranger and keyboard of Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80 Dele Sosimi and his Afrobeat Orchestra. Also recently Djing before live show of Fela’s younger son Seun Anikulapo Kuti who also attended the Rememba Fela party in Mcr, whilst studying at the Liverpool Institute Of The Perfoming Arts.
Sooo expect a bona fide celebration of the heaviest AFROBEAT and African music all night long during Black History Month UK. Party starts at 11pm – 3am. Entry is reduced to £5 if you come in Fela style face paint or £7 if you attend as you are. Spread the word and join the new group AFROBEAT YEAH YEAH and keep in touch with Afrobeat music all year round. 🙂
