Jazz & Dine at the Rooftop September

Beyond Cantaloupe formed in 2012 to explore and celebrate the music of Herbie Hancock, with particular focus on the tracks he recorded with the Blue Note label in the 1960s. The band’s set includes well-known favourites such as ‘Watermelon Man’, ‘Cantaloupe Island’ and ‘Dolphin Dance’ but also less-frequently performed tunes such as ‘One Finger Snap’, ‘A Tribute To Someone’ and ‘Speak Like A Child’ – each track carefully transcribed from the original recording to create an authentic sound whilst leaving the performers freedom to improvise. Herbie’s compositions from this period provide a sophisticated yet accessible programme to appeal to most jazz enthusiasts, ranging from hard-swingers, through to ballads, blues and bossas; meantime Simon’s commentary provides light background information about Herbie and the pioneering and fruitful decade he spent recording with Blue Note.
