Black Poppies – An illustrated talk by local historian Stephen Bourne

Stephen Bourne presents an illustrated talk about his acclaimed book Black Poppies, published by The History Press to coincide with the centenary of the First World War. Entertaining and informative, Black Poppies explores the military and civilian wartime experiences of black Britons, from the trenches to the music halls. For Black Poppies Stephen received the Southwark Arts Forum Award for Literature. The talk will be followed by a Q&A.

This event also celebrates Black History Month.

The Friends of Burgess Park project Zeppelin 1917 uncovers the stories of local heroes and the dramatic raid right over what is now Burgess Park.  Talks, walks, drama, family events and an exhibition 7-28 October will explore what WWI meant for local people’s lives and how the Great War shapes our current world.
