Solidarity is a rigorous, impassioned investigation into the long-lasting impact of blacklisting in the UK construction industry; a now illegal process through which thousands of workers were denied employment for even tenuous involvement in workplace disputes and trade union activism. Through a composite structure of worker interviews, archival footage from the parliamentary inquest, and a law school’s contemporary investigations, Parker carefully examines the situation from a multiplicity of angles as she seeks to understand, rather than explain, the agendas underlying the Blacklist and its far reaching, continuing consequences. A spare yet immensely powerful enquiry into the systemic and ideological dismantling of workers’ rights in the UK.
SOLIDARITY was made by visual arts organisation City Projects and filmmaker Lucy Parker, who has been working alongside members of the Blacklist Support Group for over four years. The project has generated several short films, exhibitions and events.
