Risk factors for prostate cancer in men of African descent
Save for Later
Dr Faruk Mohammed speaks to ecancer at the 2019 American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) meeting about the disparity that exists in the prevalence of prostate cancer among African American and African men. It is hoped that this disparity can be addressed by understanding the risk factors associated with this occurrence.
Dr Mohammed describes the use of the Prostate Cancer Transatlantic Consortium, which allows researchers to explore the biological and environmental factors that may contribute to the aetiology of prostate cancer in this population. In particular, the relationship between cortisol and prostate cancer prognosis.
He also mentions a second study which will assess the presence of the BRIC7 protein in the tumour microenvironment of colon cancer.
Over the next few years, Dr Mohammed would like to see the implementation of US cancer management strategies in Africa – in which multiple collaborations with US-based organisations are already underway.
