Black People Under Attack – What's the Policy Change?

The Council of State Governments Eastern Regional Conference, Council on Communities of Color, presents a new installment in an ongoing series of micro-summits. Our latest focus will be “Black People Under Attack – What’s the Policy Change?”

Micro-summits are produced in partnership with the B|E Note and offer insights, analysis and solutions on numerous challenges communities and governments face as the pandemic ensues. This next micro-summit will take place via Zoom on Friday, June 5th, 10am – 11am ET.

These micro summits are a unique convening of state and local policy makers, experts and thinkers concerned about the massive equity gaps and disparate impact of race and racism on communities of color.

“Black People Under Attack – What’s the Policy Change?” will be a collection of policymakers, stakeholders and experts leading a solutions-based discussion on what Black communities must do and can do to effectively respond to and prevent the reoccurrence of tragedies like the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery or the constant criminal use of 9-1-1 against Black individuals for simply existing in public spaces. Recent events in Minneapolis also put on full display a breakdown in governance and civic society when law enforcement bad actors kill Black men in broad daylight. But, the ensuing social unrest also shows the total lack of a smart, strategic community response plan that leverages political, policy and community-based assets in marginalized communities. What is the response playbook for these types of situations? Who are the stakeholders and leaders? What forms of legislation can be crafted to prevent these tragedies from happening again? And how do we keep both interactions between people and police safe while also ensuring safe neighborhoods, stability and quality of life is maintained?
