All too often, migrants and refugees face hostility, discrimination and rejection, instead of the respect and generosity everyone deserves. From the Government’s Hostile Environment, to the Windrush scandal, this is a problem playing out in our media, politics and communities that has terrible impacts. And what happens here, feeds into a rising tide of anti-immigrant sentiment across much of the globe.

But how and why did these views form?

How do we change people’s minds?

What practical steps and changes can we, and politicians make, to make migrants welcome?

5:15pm  – Free Food by Somali Kitchen for the first 60 people

6:15-8pm –  Speakers and discussion

Chair Cllr Cleo Lake

Prof Bridget Anderson – How has colonialism driven migration, and does it still shape attitudes to migrants?

Ken Macharia, Bristol Refugee Rights – A Kenyan asylum seeker’s personal experience of the Hostile Environment

Hanna and Abdul Ahmed, Bristol Somali Forum – The experience of Somali migrants in Bristol

Guy Taylor, Global Justice Now Activism Manager –  ‘Open borders – naive dream or a vision for our times?’
