STOP PRESS: The Harrow African History Season/Xtra History & Reasoning Sesion 2017/18 launches on Monday Oct. 23, 6.30-8.30pm at Harrow Civic Centre, followed by Monday Xtra History Sessions at Harrow Mencap. Watch this space for more information.

Please scroll down and also revisit for programme updates. Sessions generally take place on Mondays, 6.30-8.30pm @ Harrow Mencap. They are free – pre-booking is advised, as space is limited. The Sessions are also family-friendly, so you’re welcome to bring the youths, if you want to see them in the house!

The Living History With strand is a Q&A session with someone who is/was part of our history.

The Xtra History & Reasoning Sessions are presented by Akoben Awards in association with BTWSC/African Histories Revisted and Harrow Mencap, and facilitated/curated by music industry and history consultant Kwaku.

Harrow Mencap is less than a 5 minute walk from Harrow On The Hill tube or bus station (see map below)

We end our 2017 history and music events with this round table, where we can discuss any topic, and a social, plus a micro books, vinyl, CDs and DVDs stall. Come and join in the conversation and fun!

Nov. 27 2017, African British History: Highlighting Some Myths & Little Known Facts (Kwaku)
As part of raising awareness of the soon to be published ‘Look How Far We’ve Come: The African British History Primer’, history consultant Kwaku will reveal and debunk a number of often-repeated African British history myths, and also highlight some fascinating little known, did-you-know type facts.

Nov. 20 2017, Will The UN’s International Decade For People Of African Descent (IDPAD) 2015-24 Achieve Its Aims? (Kwaku)
The UN’s International Decade For People Of African Descent (IDPAD) 2015-24 initiative is aimed at redressing, eliminating or mitigating the discrimination and inequality experienced by African people all over the world. History consultant Kwaku will provide a series of audio-visual resources in the public domain as a precursor to interrogating whether IDPAD can achieve its aims.

Nov. 13 2017, Reframing Marcus Garvey In History Part 2 (Everol)
Everol Wilson, author of ‘My Name Is Marcus Garvey’, returns with a presentation that focuses on some of the little knwn facts about the Jamaican-born pan-Africanist leader Marcus Garvey. 

Nov. 6 2017, Look How Far We’ve Come? Marking Almost 50 Years Since The 1968 Race Relations Act (Kwaku)
The screening of history consultant Kwaku’s vox pops documentary ‘Look How Far We’ve Come: Commentaries On British Society And Racism?’ provides a context for discussing issues of racism in a post-Brexit Britain, nearly 50 years after the enactment of the 1968 Race Relations Act.

Oct. 30 2017, 6.30-8.30pm From Black History Month To African History Month/Season 30 Years On (Kwaku)
In Oct. 1987 Black History Month was launched in the UK. 30 years on, history consultant Kwaku makes the argument for marking an African History Month or Season.

Oct. 23 2017, 6.30-8.30pm Harrow African History Season 2017/18 Launch (Phillip)
The Philip siblings (Antonio, Marcel & Destiny) will lead the Harrow African History Season 2017/18 launch with a presentation speaking to “Young People’s Perspective: What We’ve Learnt From The Xtra History African History Sessions’. Oct. 19 2017, 7-9pm A United Kingdom: Special Screening For BHM (Harrow Arts/Kwaku)
Harrow Arts is organising, in Association with Harrow BHM Group, Harrow Mencap and Akoben Awards, a screening of the David Oyewolo-starring biopic ‘A United Kingdom’ at Harrow Arts, Hatch End. The film is about the story of Botswana royal heir Serestse Khama and his marriage to the European British secretary Ruth Williams, and the political storm it caused in Britain, South Africa and Botswana. Another chance to learn more about Ras Seymour McLean aka The Book Liberator. This time we can find out from his own words, as documented in ‘The Magdala Campaign’ DVD. Post-screening discussion led by Rastafari writer and actor Bro Shango.
