The 15th London #African Music Festival presents
Busi Mhlanga and Shosholoza
Singer Busi Mhlanga was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe to South African and Botswanan parents Busi Mhlanga was raised in the Zulu Ndebele tradition and the writer of the smash hits ‘Wedding Song’ and ‘Xenophobia’.
Her unique musical style has its roots in her grandfather being an ‘inyanga’ (traditional healer) and where she sings with the whole family gathering for ceremonies and celebrations where Busi would imitate the singing and dancing of her elders. Upon leaving school she joined the popular female dance troupe of Black Umfolosi which led her talents to be spotted by Zimbabwe’s most famous poet ‘the voice of the invisible’ Albert Nyathi.
After 8 years of touring Africa and Europe as Albert Nyathi’s lead vocalist she formed her own band. Busi Mhlanga has performed everywhere her Zulu song and dance workshops at major festivals like WOMAD and Glastonbury as well as playing with the likes of Hugh Masekela, Femi Kuti and The Mahotela Queens, performing at House of Commons, BBC’s The One Show, BBC 3’s ‘Don’t Tell The Bride’ and Channel 4’s live ‘Sunday Brunch’ as well as playing with the likes of Hugh Masekela, Femi Kuti and The Mahotela Queens.
Tonight #BUSIMHLANGA plays with her band SHOSHOLOZA.
