Black British Activism – The History and the Legacies

Wednesday 4 October – Tuesday 7 November, 7.00pm-9.00pm
(The final week will take place on Tuesday 7November)

2017 marks 30 years since the introduction of Black History Month to the UK, but what do we really know about the historical struggle of Black people in the fight for equality in Britain?

This innovative, intergenerational, course inspired by our archive collection will explore the rise of Black British Activism from the 1960’s onwards and the social, political and cultural context from which this emerged.

Informed by key figures and activists such as Stella Dadzie, Cecil Gutzmore and Ansel Wong, this course explores topics from the rise of Black Women’s Movements through OWAAD, Campaigns for policy change in Education, to the Uprisings of the 1980’s and the Brixton Defence Campaign that formed in response to this.

Sessions will include access to archive material related linked to the topics explored.

Lecturers: Devon Thomas, Cecil Gutzmore, Stella Dadzie, Ansel Wong, Adam Cooper, and Munira Mohamed

£50.00 for five-week course.
